It’s important to get the pose right when you draw a horse rearing up on its hind legs. Remember that the horse’s center of gravity is over its shoulders. If you draw the horse leaning too far forward or too far back, the horse will look unsteady.

This type of pose can be difficult, but don’t give up! Keep practicing until you get it right!

As for all body drawings, start with an oval for the horse’s midsection, and add ovals for the hindquarters and shoulders. Then block in the lines for the legs, tail, neck, and head, as shown in step A. Your strokes should be quick and loose to give the pose a spontaneous, natural feel.

Follow the steps to complete the drawing. Remember the horse’s skeletal and muscular structures when shading.
